Bookie’s Life Challenging Story:

This is an energizing presentation that tells how Bookie Bell founded a successful enterprise known as “Checkers Entertainment Services”. Bookie was born to perform. Being an entertainer is a passion from her very soul. Making a living as a professional entertainer has led her on an amazing journey. The key to life is finding out what your passion is. When you identify your passion it’s like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

Being raised on a farm she learned how to be an entrepreneur at a very early age. Living on a farm money was always tight. Bookie wanted a pair of white buck shoes for school. Her mother suggested that she pick pop bottles and return them for cash. By September when she returned to school she had a new pair of white buck shoes just from picking pop bottles. Thus a young entrepreneur was created.

She worked at the neighbouring farms picking strawberries for 5 cents a box, raspberries at 10 cents a box and peas at 25 cents a basket. This gave her money to go to the movies, have popcorn and ice cream cones.

What Bookie learned as a farmer’s daughter has taught her how to make an honest living and treat people fairly.

At 16, Bookie married 18-year-old Don Bell, and they are still together after 42 years. They have two amazing adult children with who are both entertainers in their own way.

Formerly, Don and Bookie were partners in an automotive repair shop with three tow trucks. While running that business, she was nominated for and elected as the first woman in Canada to sit on the board of directors for the Canadian Towing Society. This experience taught her the realities of owning a business, keeping a healthy cash flow, dealing with suppliers, employees, and other aspects of successful entrepreneurship. During this time, Bookie took both basic and an advanced entertainer courses offered in our community – a tiny step that planted the seed for her life’s journey to fill big shoes.

In 1994 they sold this successful business, and a year later the buyers lost the business. They held a second mortgage and lost a large amount of money. After digesting this shocking news, Bookie pulled up her socks, took a deep breath and got on with life.

The rest is so called history. Through hard work and dedication Bookie owns and operates an award winning business called “Checkers Entertainment Service”.
